Interesting times Jul 14, 2008

You know the chinese curse, “May you live in interesting times?” Yesterday was interesting, and my times proved it. I now know exactly what a mixture of tire smoke and flop sweat smells like.

To put it another way, that dreams I had came true, only the big slide wasn’t beautifully controlled, it was wild, flailing and miserable.

The day started well. My boy and I were greeted with beautiful weather and the usual friendly folks from the Crown Autocross Club, but went downhill fast.

On the first run I went the wrong way.

On the second I had a little spin.

On the third I had a huge spin.

On the fourth, I just wanted one clean run, and still hit a cone.

So, I’ll chalk it up to a learning experience. What did I learn? Well, frankly I was driving more aggressively than I have the skill to back up. Much like playing guitar, slow down, learn the control, and the speed will come. I’d love to say it was my tires, or the course, or a voodoo curse that made things go awry but really, it was just the loose nut behind the wheel.

That, and in the mind of a 10-year-old, a giant tire-smoking slide is “awesome”.

Still, even though my performance was embarrassing, we had a lot of fun. Just have to do better next time. My boy took the pic of our Miata. Funny — it doesn’t look that slow when I’m not behind the wheel.
