Sconsin here I come! Jul 13, 2005
Well, tomorrow I board one of them new fangled flying machines bound for the Windy City of Chicago. From there Bryce (our hotshoe intern) and I will be driving up to the land of Cheese, Beer, and Kohler faucets. This weekend at Road America in beautiful Elkhart Lake WI, the Brian Redmond International Challenge or BRIC is held. If you haven’t been to Road America before, you need to go. Imagine a beautiful 4 mile road course with plenty of elevation changes, that someone dropped into a lovely state park, and you are getting the idea. Not only is the track great, with it’s clean facilities, ample camping areas, and pleasant staff, but it’s only a couple miles from downtown Elkhart Lake. This weekend the town will be rockin! Friday night the local authorites open the public highways for the racecars to come on down and gather in the center of town. The streets will be filled with exotic and awsome racing machines from the past. Cobras, Ferraris, Can Am cars, even a Cheetah has been known to show up. The kicker is, at dusk, all the cars fire up and blast out of town. The crowds line the streets as the wonderful old race cars roar by. It’s car guy nirvana.
On Saturday night the scene repeats itself, only with a street car show. Plenty of DB4’s, Corvettes, 300sl’s and other amazing machines will be lined up for the gawking.
Out of all of the events I go to throughout the year, the BRIC is easliy in the top 5, and maybe the most fun of all. You just can’t beat the combination of wonderful cars, an incredible and historic track, great food (walleye anyone?), and maybe the nicest people in the country. If you love vintage racing, or just cars in general, the BRIC is an absolute must see. It’s only an hour or so from downtown Milwaulke, and if you are coming up through Chicago (like we are) you can stop at the world famous Mars Cheese Castle! It’s in Kenosha WI, the former home of AMC motors, and you can’t miss the sign. I mean, you REALLY can’t miss the sign, it’s larger than the castle itself! Ahhh, eating cheese curds near the home of the Gremlin….what could be more sophisticated.
We hope to see you there!
