Live from Topeka, KS—part deux Sep 14, 2008
To paraphrase the late Shannon Hoon, “Life ain’t so E36 M3-ey”. I’m on my first trip to the SCCA Solo National Championships, and I’m really excited about being here. I’ve had the goal to compete here for a long time, so regardless of the event results, it’s nice to put an ‘X’ in the completed block for this one.
Another part that doesn’t suck is my ride for the event; Per has gotten our Project MINI Cooper S set up well enough to dominate local competition regularly, and won a Solo National Tour event with it earlier this year. We’re driving on brand-new Hoosier A6 tires with well-adjusted Koni shocks. In fact, the whole setup is about as prepared as the SCCA rulebook will allow for. I’ve also recently attended an Evolution Autocross School event. I felt I had the fundamental car control skills down, and had started concentrating on the mental side of the competition.
It’s my first event, and I’ve only driven the car on this trip, but I’m dangerously optimistic in my outlook for the competition. My goal is to simply not be last in the G stock class, but I’ve got a good side bet with Per if I manage to keep at least three of my six timed runs penalty-free. I’ve got a feeling that winning the bet will make my goal a second thought, but we’ll see what happens. Wish me luck for Tuesday and Wednesday!

- Looks like you made your goal and won the side bet! Congrats My son and I also competed at nationals for the first time. It was a terrific learing experience and made the trip from Pennsylvania worth while. I wrote an article for our region's newsletter. I'm not a journalist or writer but take a look and let me know what you think. http://www.scca-cpr.org/Files/Newsletter/2008Newsletter/October08.pdf S
