Somehow I missed this thread. I read through the whole thing today. Looking forward to seeing it there.

I can't believe I never saw this thread until the sale post. I'm very interested in it as a roller and would like to look through your broken ls parts pile. Best of luck at the challenge this weekend.

We were pretty exhausted after getting the van motor pulled and getting the van body back on the frame, it was about 1pm at that point, neither of us had slept really since the night before. Dale had to work and i was wiped so i went home, took a nap, came back with other teamate Derek and we got the motor and trans in and cleaned up most of the giant atf/oil spill.
ill come in early tomorrow morning and hook everything up and drive it on the trailer.  Pleeeenty of time.

this 4.8 is disgusting. Just how i like them

Well we made it here, survived auto-x and came in 2nd for drag racing behind the Nelsons mind boggling repeated 9.06.
We went 12.3 twice (which is way slow for this setup), first run leaving off footbrake and short shifting, 2nd run leaving off the trans brake but sending it with a 4k rpm launch which spun.
however in our haste putting the car together we missed the lower wastegate hose so it was essentially pinned shut the entire time.
This wouldn't be a issue with the old turbo but.. last minute we did decided to do a turbo upgrade with our newfound budget room.
result:
Both drag race runs it hit 30 lbs boost at the end of the track, on the second run it hurt something. Smoke machine.
it still runs though!

Completely stock bmw rear axles/diff still together!

as soon as we got back this evening and unloaded everything we did a compression test, found #7 had 0, hoped it was just a head gasket, pulled the head, found a melted piston. We put the head back on and drove it into the shop where it will sit until it gets parted out.
if it was just the head gasket we would take it to the local test and tune and see if what it can really do with some real tuning but i dont have time or desire to do yet another engine in/out in this car.
We are pretty confident this car would easily go 10's with a mild launch and just spring pressure in the gate.

It might be neat to basically do over this car with a slightly nicer one, better suspension and auto-x tires, and less power. I think it could have had the potential to be a really high finisher with what we know now. Maybe one day!

who wants to buy this roller smiley

The really big lessons from our wastegate failure was not that we had it hooked up wrong, it was not stopping to check the logs between runs and immediately hopping back in the lane after the first run. If i had stopped to check the log after the first run, and not been impatient and immediately got right back in the lane and went for a 4k-rpm transbrake launch, we would have clearly seen the boost ramp up solidly to 30lbs and pin the Map sensor on the first run and caught it before it hurt anything.
the 2nd run picked up enough to hit 280F IAT and 30lbs for 1.7 seconds, 13.5 AFR, ouch

It is just a piston... I could probably have the motor out, piston swapped, motor back in and running again in a few hours solo...

It is a pity that it is dismantled, let it be repaired, but whoever does not drive it does not break, I wish that you could continue to ride if you fix it and let it drive as much time as possible :)

Great talking to you guys this weekend.

You guys are definitely learning quickly with this car. I expect you guys to bring something even crazier in the future.

In the second pic you can see the new turbo oil feed we did the last minute before Challenge. It was the power steering hose from the van. The metal tube runs perfectly down the length under the intake manifold, like factory

So far so good. The car has exactly the same parts as it had in Gainesville, this pass was on on a 6spi wastegate spring only.

Way more left in it too. Keep in mind this is with the completely stock 4.8 (besides valve springs)

Next motor combo is planned.
Im selling the 799 heads off the original aluminum 5.3 block which will fully recoupe that,

The current 4.8 long block is fully recouped

So going to legitimately  clean out the aluminum 5.3 block and put the 4.8 rotating assembly and heads in that, aluminum 4.8. Going to actually do it right. I have new rod and cam bearings from amazon warehouse deals.

The current valve springs are really nice Riverdale speed springs but they were $145 and way overkill for this car, going to loose those and find some takeout OEM springs like LS6 or LS3 that will be way cheaper.
and then since the 5.3 is set up for front cam sensor i can use a LS9 cam which are usually <$100. I may just stick with the stock cam though as it may be fine for our goals. Unfortunately my $50 BTR Turbo cam is completely wrecked.
so, aluminum 4.8 with cam/spring upgrade for <$200. that gets us some power  and weight back without a big budget chunk.

$80 gt45 turbo is going back on for now as i have to return the billet 78/75 to another build :(

the original 2020 setup was $150 long block, $150 cam, $145 valve springs so this is much better budget wise

other mods for the next few months are deleting the front cage section to get some weight and budget back, and switching the car from the MS3 Goldbox to a regular Microsquirt (goldbox going on the 2JZ Fox)
