Sure, a track record during the 1985 12 Hours of Sebring ranks high among this Porsche 962’s accomplishments, but let’s not forget that it also made an appearance in a Miami Vice episode filmed during the 1985 Grand Prix of Miami.
No question, this car was fast. It took the pole for the 1985 Daytona 24, with Hans-Joachim Stuck, Bob Akin and Paul Miller behind the wheel. Then, at the 12 Hours of Sebring, it set the track record. “Stuck came around the final turn at Sebring completely sideways, which you are not supposed to do in a ground-effects car, and crossed the line about three seconds ahead of second place,” said Akin of Stuck’s record-breaking qualifying run.
After its racing and (brief) TV career, the 962 underwent a restoration initiated by Jim Torres and principally conducted by Gunnar Racing. In addition to being displayed at the Petersen Automotive Museum, the Porsche has also been an Amelia Concours d’Elegance honoree and a frequent participant at the Rennsport Reunion.
