The tire noise you hear from inside them while autocrossing is eerie.

Preach brother. My son and I drop the top even if it's raining. The better sight lines are well worth getting wet.
I would frequently autocross with my s2000's top up on hot, sunny days. The comfort advantage should not be overlooked. Other than my helmet bumping the frame every now and then there were no disadvantages.
OK so this is shameless but here is a link to the onboard of my F500; the run starts at 2:25 but I think the launch is pretty rapid.
