Miata Clutch Problem

My '91's clutch is showing some strange symptoms. The clutch pedal feels normal, then soft, then dead, then back to normal, then feels like I'm stepping on a bowl of oatmeal, then normal, then I'll go to shift and it's already on the floor.

I recently (about 1 month ago) replaced the leaky slave cylinder and while doing so I also went ahead and replaced the rubber hose with a braided steel.

There are no leaks that I can see and the fluid level has remained at the full mark

My first thought was air in the line, but would it take a month of daily driving for the symptoms to show? Now I'm thinking it is the clutch master cylinder on its way out.

What do you guys think?

Sounds like you're right about the master.

I'd start by bleeding the system, because I'm lazy and that's less work than replacing anything.

Agreed. That's what I am going to do first. Of course the drive home was trouble free with a normal clutch feel the whole way.

Could air cause the erratic behaviour?

That's pretty much what my master in the '88 Mazda 323 GTX did when it died.

I say buck up and replace the master cylinder.
