I have a set of 235/40/18 Dunlop Direzza ZII on my track wheels right now. Tire rack lists their section width as 8.9". They are old and worn out so I was planning to replace them soon. I noticed that Tire Rack has the Hankook R-4S on sale right now. The 235/40/18 R-4S is listed as having a 9.8" section width.  If that is true I'm afraid they might rub. Does that seem right?

I haven't run the ZIIs so I can't offer a comparison in widths, but I run R-S4s on all of my cars that see the track (which is all of them except the Cayenne) and I can confirm that the Hankooks run wide by roughly a full size.

My only data point is that my 195 RS4's were the same tread width as my 205 RE-71R's.

I decided not to chance it and ordered the 225/40/18. They were $11 more expensive (more popular size?) per tire, but the section/tread widths looks like they line up with the 235 Direzzas. I'm not racing anyway. I'm sure they will be better than the 7 year old chunked up Dunlops.

I cant compare these 2 specifically, but I know that a 225 rs4 is no wider then a 205 falken

Am I missing something? The RS4s are very clearly wider than the falkens in that photo. 40mm total wider? maybe not, but it's hard to tell, and unmounted isn't necessarily a fully accurate representation because the sidewall/bead area could be different shapes.

I don't see any reason to not believe the tire rack measurements. The RS4s do tend to run wide in the larger sizes. Just make sure the measurements were done on wheels of the same width. Which I believe they were in this case.

These are mounted, the hankooks came out a little wider, but not by much.  Maybe this just speaks to how wide the falkens run.

Sorry, they look unmounted from that angle. But you're right, the falkens also tended to run wide in some sizes.
