Very rare photograph!  Those cars on the left were Ford's original Group B effort, the RS1700T.  Basically a turbocharged 1.7l BD engine in a Mk3 Escort converted to rear drive.  They never bothered with more than a small handful of prototypes once they realized that going forward they really needed all wheel drive, and preferably mid engine.

The 1.7 was used with updates in the RS200, although because of how heavy the car was, they could run it in the next weight class higher, so the Evolution models had a 2.1l version.

History repeated itself a bit when they homologated a later generation Escort body on a Sierra XR4x4 floorpan...

MRTE, a semi privateer organization, built around 20 cars largely using road racing parts from Mazda Comp.  The interesting thing is that the homologation paperwork lists the GSL-SE (a North American only vehicle) as the homologation car.  That way they could use the 13B engine.

Mazda built a few more than 200 GSL-SEs.

They used the standard road racing peripheral port 13B, the Comp transmission, Comp radiator and oil coolers, etc.  I think the only truly Group B specific stuff besides the bodywork was the full floater rearend.  It also appeared to use the stock lower links, and lower links mounted to the stock upper location on the axles, with new mounts positioned in the wheelwells, turning it into a parallel equal length 4 link like the Group 4 Escorts and Group B Celicas had.

The Celicas were interesting because they look like they just copied the Escort for everything.
