Two Lane Blacktop

As a movie its horrible, as vintage car porn its world class.

I use this as an example anytime someone complains that a movie is unrealistic. It was literally filmed with the premise of "What if they filmed a week of someone's life?" They happen to be street racers, but it also shows all the boring bits of life that isn't racing. That's what you wanted, right?

Take your realism and stick it.

I'm a big fan of car movies, and can appreciate a good B movie like Speedtrap or Grand Theft Auto (not the video game). But Two Lane Blacktop is just unwatchable.

Cannonball Run. Really bad 'comedy' with virtually no car content.

Anything with "Fast & Furious" in the title. Which includes the pretty terrible 1950s original.

I don't care about any Marvel movies or anything related to Star Wars.

Beetlejuice. Just...wtf?

Movies that will be bad because of the actors in it:  Adam Sandler, Nicholas Cage, Will Ferrell.

I tell people an accurate racing movie would be 2 hours of tire selection debate.

Good video. I liked that The Enemy Below was included, but also wished Ice Station Zebra was also covered.

Howard Hughes watched Ice Station Zebra over and over again in the middle of the night in his Las Vegas penthouse then bought a TV station in Vegas so he could run the movie on TV all night long without rethreading the projector.

I bought the DVD and watched it. It was ok as an old cold war movie but not great. I don't get Howard's obsession with that particular movie. He must have gotten crazy in his old age.

Nicholas Cage was part of why the remake of Gone in 60 Seconds just sucked. You can't remake something that never had a script inthe first place.

Roger Ebert had it right. If you are doing a remake, make it better. Robocop remake? Not even close to topping the original.  John Carpenter's The Thing? Light years better than the 50s B-movie. The remake of that one recently (yes, they tried)...not even a blip, which is why we remember the Carpenter version.

Apparently in the recent remake, the special effects people actually did all the work to create awesome practical effects in loving homage to the movie that sparked their love of the art. The producers looked at it and said, "What the berk is this?!? It looks like something from the 80's!" and made them cover up the cool practical effects with crappy, rushed, CGI.

My personal hate list:

-Avatar
-Titanic
-Forrest Gump
-The Goonies
-The 5th Element

And not that they were necessarily critically acclaimed or well loved, but coming from someone who loves Tolkein and the original Peter Jackson trilogy, berkeley the Hobbit Trilogy. What a godawful, bloated mess.

If you enjoyed the cartoon,  or had even a vague idea of the premise of the show, no, hard no, that movie was so bad it could suck the chrome off a traiker hitch. I'm convinced the Wachowskis have never seen the show and just looked at the back of a DVD case.

I actually kind of agree and disagree with you on this. I think he can be hilarious if he isn't the main actor but when he is the main it is generally kind of crap except Anchorman.

...because of Steve Carell and Christina Applegate.

Any scene from that movie with Will Ferrell without one of those two can arguably be skipped.

Which is also why the 'pants party' is the best scene.

The only movies that I really like Will Ferrell in are NOT comedies.  He's just not funny, at least not in person.  As a voice-only actor he's had some decent showings: Megamind and The LEGO Movie (where he's also fine as the father in the live action sequences).  He doesn't seem to overplay so horrendously when it's a voiceover.  But as a live-action comedy actor he has absolutely zero sense of when to stop, or even just dial it back a little.

He's very good in a non-comedic role in Everything Must Go - I strongly recommend seeing it.

What's wrong with a Roger Corman movie with an endless parade of old British sports cars from the 50s?

Stranger than Fiction is really out of his comfort zone, and a really good rom-com, sort of.  I really enjoy it.

Elf is great.  I can see how it would be irritating to some people, but Ferrel just completes that movie.

His placing the emphasis on the wrong syllable in Megamind is berkeleying genius. "Metrocity" with the soft O and emphasis on City slays me.

Almost everything else he's done, I don't really care for.

There are fireworks retailers on I-70 called "Pyro City", which I now always pronounce in my head as Pie-RAH-city...

I think it's one of those movies you run in the background with the sound off while you're having a party. It's pretty awful otherwise.

As for "Elf", I sat through it once. I kept waiting for it to be funny instead of annoying. I'm still waiting.

I'd say the only good parts were when they re-enacted scenes that actually happened during the real Canonball race.

Oddly enough, I don't remember disliking Cloud Atlas.  That's the one where all the characters are in each others' stories, right?

It's the one where Halle Berry and Tom Hanks supposedly play the same soul in multiple different incarnations over hundreds of years.  They totally miss the mark.  One of Hanks' incarnations he is a "fabricant" or a synthetic human but they never address why a synthetic human A) looks just like Tom Hanks or B) inherited his soul.  The whole thing is like an anthology of boredom.  I had such high hopes for it being a cerebral take on reincarnation with some big resolution at the end that brings it all together like Usual Suspects, or 21 Grams, or Traffic.  But, alas... just a bunch of boring stories.   Cinematography was great.  Costumes and makeup was embarrassing.  Script was likely written by someone with Dementia or after a series of strokes.

I am a fan of science fiction(among other genres, but will limit this comment to science fiction)

These are TERRIBLE science fiction movies:

1. Star Wars(any and all of them).

2. The Fifth Element.

3. Independence Day.

A few examples of GOOD science fiction.

1. District 9

2. Gataca

3. Monsters

To be clear, just because a movie is bad doesn't mean I don't get entertainment out of it, just that its pointless.

In regards to science fiction, its always going to be bad if science fiction is not needed to tell the story(IE Star Wars(the original movie): You could simply have told a story about a person whose family was killed by an occupying army, who then ran away to join a resistance group motivated by revenge to overthrow said army...there is zero reason to add spaceships and lightsabers and an interstellar civilization to tell this story and they add nothing to it). Compare that to say Gataca...where science fiction in the form of genetic modification is critical to the story making it nearly impossible to have the same impact without that aspect. Both District 9 and Monsters might have been able to scrape by without the science fiction aspect, but they touch on Xenophobia in such a way that the aspect actually adds to the impact. I won't even bother mentioning the worthless lightshows of Independence Day and The Fifth Element

Star Wars is not science fiction.  It's science fantasy..... and it's effectively a western (at least the first one).

You could probably argue many Star Treks are also science fantasy, since there is generally no real science in many (made up fantasy science doesn't really count).

Real science fiction seems to be very difficult to get made.  Even The Matrix, which was a highly creative work, kind of sh%ts the bed when they (the studio) changed the ENTIRE reasoning behind the Matrix... to a power plant!  Distributed computation (the original idea) works freakin' fine.  Even justifying it by "the only way to truly keep humans safe" would work great.
