I spent a number of years moderating some extremely popular forums. One of the best tricks in my arsenal to combat spam was to restrict posts by new users: If they hadn't commented (x) number of times, they could not create new posts. This at least helped stop a fair bit of the dreck. I don't know if that's an option here, but it's at least something. IP addresses are too easily spoofed.
