Think of this kind of like a mini-Brewster's Millions, you have $1.8 million to burn. You can only buy one thing. You can never sell it, so speculative investment items are pointless. Let's say maintenance,  housing, etc... are not to be figured into it, so we don't suck the fun out of this game.  Let's call multiple small piece things like a complete HO scale layout as one thing, but not one of every year ZR-1 Corvette.

What's the one thing you buy?

Seriously though some land near me to build a small guest house for family to stay plus a big shop with room for machining equipment and a full size lift and in separate part an indoor halfpipe.

NIO EP9, I should have a decent shot at being able to afford "fuel" and maintenance.

Seems to be more than one thing.

I can consider an observatory as one thing.  But not really a museum...

But would be a cool thing to have.  Heck $1.8M of stuff that is interesting enough to have a museum that people could enjoy seeing it.

I see it the opposite.  If you have a museum with nothing in it, it's a building, thus not a museum. Unless it's a building museum, in which case the semantics get even more obtuse. laugh

I recall doing this exercise in High School, but he added a couple rules...

- We weren't allowed to "Throw it away". Buying 50 Corvettes counted as throwing it away.

- We weren't allowed to give it away.

- We weren't allowed to buy anything that would reasonably be expected to grow in value. Expensive cars, houses, mink coats, fancy jewelry, etc were all ruled out.

The point was to show how hard it is to lose money when you start with a million dollars in net worth.

That was 1979, so the numbers were different. But the concept is the same. It's actually kinda hard to waste huge chunks of money.

Well, between this and the other 1.8 thread, this one is by far the more interesting.  But it seems people are confused by the word "wasting."

Buying real estate is the no-brainer, but it's hardly wasting.  In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better store of value, with a potential for considerable upside.  If your aim was to waste 1.8 million, I would choose to buy one or two or maybe three insane supercars and the petrol to drive them.

I suspect there are some bankrupt NBA and NFL players and lottery winners that would choose to differ.  At any rate, it's a problem not many of us will ever have, well, unless we choose to go work for the government.  angry
