Could this BMW-based dune buggy be the ultimate low-buck racer? | #LowBuckWednesday

When it comes to dune buggies, why let VW have all the fun?

That seems to have been the thinking behind the unique machine Jeremy Randolph plans to enter into our Grassroots Motorsports $2000 Challenge. Better known as pimpm3 on the forum, Jeremy purchased the BMW 325xi-turned-racing-kart from another Challenge competitor, Robbie Cutcliffe, after last year's event.

The plan for the BMW, since Jeremy already has a 2022 Subaru BRZ dedicated for track days and autocross, is to create a four-seater dune buggy. However, as the saying goes, you can take the car out of the $2000 Challenge, but you can’t take the $2000 Challenge out of the car. So, the BMW dune buggy is once again returning to our annual low-buck competition.

What is the $2000 Challenge? It’s our annual low-buck automotive festival that celebrates autocross, drag racing and ingenuity, which returns to Gainesville Raceway in Gainesville, Florida, on a new weekend for 2023, May 27-28.

The real challenge is in the event's name, however, as entries are required to prepare their vehicles for less than $2000. Each of these sub-$2000 cars will compete in autocross and drag racing sessions followed by concours judging the next day.

Rather see if more money equals more speed? Over-budget builds are also allowed to enter. Need more time to get your build ready? Spectators are welcome, and there will also be a Hagerty Cars & Caffeine, swap meet, model car concours and even a post-event track day at the Florida International Rally & Motorsport Park.

Think your low-buck racer or over-budget car is up to the challenge? Enter your build here, and learn more about the $2000 Challenge at 2000challenge.com.

The Grassroots Motorsports $2000 Challenge is presented by Tire Rack, in association with CRC Industries and Miller Electric, with trophies from ACI Automotive & Performance and Trackkrats

Having gotten a fun run in this thing, it handled far better than it had any right to- fix the brake bias and it's perfect.

I am famous. Sort of laugh...

Honestly I am bringing it because I don't have any better options at the moment and it's kind of the easy button.    I haven't really done much to it other than adding real headlights, a dashboard and a hood.

It was fun at the FIRM after challenge track day when Robbie let me take a few laps in it and I imagine it will be pretty great on the autocross course.

I am not going to do much to it other than a set of RT660'S on the wheels that came on it.
