Jeep Compass: Like an off-road Alfa Romeo Tonale or Dodge Hornet

Looking for an Alfa Romeo Tonale or a Dodge Hornet that’s a bit more Jeep-like? Are you in luck: Starting with the 2022 model year, the latest Jeep Compass shares the same chassis.

Power comes from the familiar turbo 2.0-liter engine that makes 200 horsepower along with 221 lb.-ft. of torque. Likewise, the vehicle’s profile will seem familiar, too.

What makes this version similar? Jeep things.

Specifically, the Compass Trailhawk gets something called Jeep Active Drive Low: a 20:1 crawl ratio along with a low range.

More from Jeep about that equipment:

Both Jeep Active Drive and Active Drive Low 4x4 systems include the Jeep Selec-Terrain system, providing up to four modes (Auto, Snow, Sand/Mud modes, plus exclusive Rock mode on the Trailhawk model) for driver controllable, four-wheel-drive performance on- or off-road and in all weather conditions.

For even greater Trail Rated off-road capability, Selec-Terrain includes standard Hill-descent Control on Trailhawk models. Hill-descent Control maintains vehicle speed down steep, rugged grades by actively controlling the brakes, allowing the driver to focus on steering.

More off-road gear found on the Compass Trailhawk: a 1-inch lift, skid plates, knobby tires and up to 19 inches of water crossing ability.

We didn’t drive the Compass Trailhawk, though, as we sampled the 2023 Limited (RED). Call it a tuned a bit more for the paved world.

As expected, it reminded us of the Alfa Romeo Tonale and Dodge Hornet, so striking looks, about the right size and quick enough for the class but. At the end of the day, though, it’s another entry into a rather crowded market.

Does that matter for its intended market? We’re guessing those seven openings in the grille will mean the most.
