Ten track events in one week while covering thousands of grueling transit miles? Sign us up!
The event, of course, is the 2023 Tire Rack One Lap of America Presented by Grassroots Motorsports Magazine. Built in the spirit of the original Cannonball Run, this week-long, 3500-mile event challenges participants to use one car, on one set of tires, for 10 back-to-back track days spread out across the country.
We’ve been participating in the event for years, and even managed a class win in 2022. One Lap always brings out some serious drivers in serious cars, with names from pro racing’s rosters running cars like Porsche’s 911 GT2 RS or McLaren’s 720S, a car we’ve campaigned with great success over the years.
This year, though, the check engine light gods threw our plans out the window and sidelined the McLaren. Instead, we’ll be doing One Lap 2023 in something much more pedestrian: our 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI project car.
We’ve focused that build on the premise of doing it all–meaning track days and the daily commute–with one car on one set of tires. So what better test is there than this?
The biggest modification will be a fresh set of tires, switching over to more aggressive rubber with a move to Bridgestone’s Potenza RE-71RS. Why Bridgestone? Simple: Our tire testing guide says it’s the best tool for this job, and the tire guide knows best.
Will our used Volkswagen be a breath of fresh air and a welcome break from supercar land? Or will we be hopelessly outgunned while chasing the back of the One Lap pack? We’ll keep this thread updated in real time along the way as we pursue One Lap glory.

That’s good reading, and we owe a huge thanks to Brock Yates for the photo help. This was all back in the days of film. Brock sent me a box full of slides from the early days and said to have fun.
Just finished up at the vinyl shop! Looks half-finished because we don't get our number panels until we arrive at the event, but it's at least a start.
Next stop is Target, as I need to find a more suitable pit vehicle. The bike isn't allowed on track due to the battery, plus it's fairly big. A scooter will solve both problems.
Fluids changed, alignment checked/corrected, packing almost complete.
@Tom I am disappointed you're stealing my look. I wanted to be the cool hatchback on bronze wheels.
And he's off! Next stop? Nashville, where he's registered for a Track Night in America. Since Andy has never driven this car, he's going to do the drive to South Bend and get some track time in the process.
I once dreamed of flying into Daytona, helmet in hand, to drive someone else's race car in a grueling endurance motorsports contest.
Today that dream came true...mostly.
This isn't the car in the dream.
A little slice of Texas here in Georgia.
Oh and Tom...your DEF tank was low so I filled it. TDI's are awesome.
There are certain curbs at Nashville SuperSpeedway that you're not supposed to hit, especially in a FWD car...cuz it'll send you onto two wheels.
Wheee!! Oops, sorry Tom.
So, some driving impressions:
Taut yet compliant on the highway. Great passing power and carves cloverleafs well.
On the track, the front tires are easily overloaded without constant attention. Braking is excellent, though the slotted rotors have that annoying rumble feel. Acceleration is solid but falls short of "rocket ship".
I have a couple ideas to try this week to see if we can get a little more rotation and get this thing off it's nose.
Andy just sent me this photo... waiting to hear if I'll need to bail him out tomorrow when I get off the plane.
And with a $170 ticket for 81 in a 65, Andy has officially earned the VW's first (hopefully last) speeding ticket. Congratulations!

Sounds like you just need the extra width in the front... much easier to get massage the metal upfront to stretch over said with. Just ask Paashaus... he helped work his jack-handle magic on my TL for just such purposes back in 2018.
Also, that looks like a whole bunch of mounting lube that needs to be burned off for best Wet Sidpad performance!?
Headed to the airport. First flight delayed for six hours (well after my connection leaves), but I'm no quitter and found another from a different airport. Rebooked and should still arrive in time for dinner!
In reply to sleepyhead the buffalo :
Tires have been scrubbed early this am. I also found out that the car will fuel starve at about 1/8 tank when driving sustained circles ...
Good luck this week Andy and Tom. I was driving down the thruway yesterday evening and I passed a car that looked like it was on it's way to the start (on the trailer with a trailer on it). I think it was this one.

For those not familiar, today's morning event is a wet skid pad competiton.
This is Tire Rack's facility in South Bend, IN right off the Indiana Turnpike. National HQ offices and warehouse....and track.
The competition is held on just the most center circle. The track has an elaborate sprinkler system. Not to water the grass but rather to water the asphalt!
The competition is 2 rounds left followed immediately by two rounds right. Today, as the first event, every competitor has the most tread they are going to have. The final event of One Lap is back here, but being the end, now with worn tires. That last event is intended to be a dry skid pad...unless it rains.
It should be noted, that like all One Lap events the 2 left and 2 right are both counted. There are no "throw outs" or "warm ups" for this event.
Tom Suddard said:Almost our turn on the skidpad. We're in, uh, different company than the McLaren would be.
different, but still the best company

Also notable in the video are:
37 min mark, Turbo and/or Supercharged Toyota Corollas.
42 min mark, Rambler wagon

I regret to inform you that you got beat by a Kia Rio, and have slipped back to 32nd overall in the end on the wet skidpad.
On our way to Nelson Ledges...short 4.5 hour jaunt.
Tom went slower on third run but still managed to stay ahead of two national champs (me and Randy Pobst) to finish 3rd in class around the cones.
Early arrival means a sit-down dinner.

Hell yeah! The Rio took 16th out of 86 for the overall and 1st in the Sundae Class for skidpad.
Then, took 47th out of 86 in the autox. which is also first in Sundae. These are great showing for a car that should be considered "wheezy" compared to the competition.
Based on live timing, Bob kept a 1/2sec over Scott/Becky in Mooncake... and are they thus leading the class into day 2...

In reply to sleepyhead the buffalo :
In the Rio, do you know who was at the helm for the skidpad? I presume Bob was the driver of the autox given that it is his "home field." Was Seth, multi-time-one-lapper, driving the skidpad?
John Welsh said:In reply to sleepyhead the buffalo :

Seth said "Bob is killing it today", so I presume he's done all the competition driving so far... although it's possible Seth took the third run at the AutoX.
Bob rocks!
The aforementioned MG V8 is having a better showing that I expected.
42 in Skidpad
35 in Autox
Squarely mid pack or better.
Cumulative results for 2 events so far:
Tom and Andy GTI at 29
Bob and Seth Rio at 31
These are the two highest placing cars that are just "plain ole cars" not the halo model of a manufacturer or the highest spec of a a model.
Edit: I guess Reg's 2009 GTI at 28 is also there just ahead of them but this car has some more mods on it than Tom's generally street spec engine.
MG V8 at 40
Very cool! Yeah, our car is much cheaper and much less modified than 90% of the field--is this what Sundae Cup feels like? Not a terrible way to do OLOA.
someone else to keep track of is forum user "BradLTL", who's running a Mini with his dad in SGT2-SB (seems like Retro got rolled into there this year, through lack of entries?). Brad put his autocross background to use, clawing back positions from the wet skidpad.
also, looking through the livetiming from AutoX, I noticed venerible "good dudes" Bob&Ted were one of two mysterious SGT1-SB corvette entries (should be cars after 1991, >$55k, <3.7L). Which implies that a) they managed to find one of the extremely rare 3.7L C6 corvette varieties; b) are running on 6 cylinders, for the funsies; c) someone tripped up when setting their classing.
Running the numbers, almost 25% of the field is entered in SGT1-BB; and 15% of the field are Corvettes... which, afaik, is the most numerous model entered this year.
edit:
The slip-up in SGT1-SB / SGT1-BB, and the sheer number of Corvettes/SGT1-BB entries, had me pondering what the "cheapest" mid-pack SGT1-BB entry would be?

now with all of todays fun and wins we really have nowhere to go but down in rankings sadly. The 110whp is going to start to shown itself the next few days. We got some great competitors both in class and overall.
Now that we've got some downtime, we're reviewing today's video to see if we can find opportunities. Interestingly, we both approached the autocross completely differently, and the perfect run would have elements from each of ours.
Here's the video if anybody else has comments:
First run group is lining up! We're now onto the "real" One Lap: Each team gets one out lap, then three laps from a standing start. Each of those is timed, and every time counts. There's no room for error at the front of the field.
Almost time for our first session; Andy is going to go out first as he's been here before, and this session will set the run order for the rest of the week. Here's our target: the factory-backed Camry.
Light rain just started, which means a mad dash to the line in order to gain advantage. Andy just joined the car pile.
Nelson's Ledges was the first track I ever ran, back in the late '90's. It was pretty rough back then, both pavement and facilities wise but was less than 45 minutes from my apartment. Good luck!
Nice to see Seth again, I miss reading his posts here...
Let's see if FB imbed works...
if not, here's a link to pictures from the official OneLap photographers: Driftpoint Media from day 1.
First session went well--we ended up with something like a 1:21 average. Next group starts at noon, so I'll see if I can beat that.

I started my motorsports life here in 2001. You wouldn't recognize it, there is like running water and stuff. And the track has been repaved.
There are some interesting bobbles in the pavement entering T1 and also on the inside - saw some of the first cars get a little dicey. Evora throwing sparks on corner entry like a F1 car

22nd overall, nice job Tom!
Results were just posted; in the afternoon we landed 22nd overall, which should help our points considerably. The Camry was over 15 seconds slower than us, so we seem to have a significant advantage in the rain.
Andy and I will be doing rain dances for the rest of the week!

That Mercedes was HUGE and very fast, in The morning heats it was lined up behind the cayenne and wasn't that much smaller
I didn't know anything about the Mercedes GT 6.3s so I looked it up.
https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a28789838/2019-mercedes-amg-gt63-s-by-the-numbers/
The GT63 S's twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 heart pounds out 630 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. All that throbbing energy is routed through a nine-speed automatic and the AMG-tuned 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, which enables this Mercedes to bolt to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds. The quarter-mile is an 11.1-second 125-mph blur. AMG claims a top speed of 195 mph; it says as much on the tire-inflation sticker on the inside of the gas-filler flap that instructs you to increase the tire pressures for driving at speeds above 156 mph. In our testing, the GT63 S reached 175 mph from rest in the space of one mile.
... that extra gear pumped up the GT63 S's $160,995 asking price to $189,360
...pricey rear tires ($554 each at Tire Rack last we checked)

Sundae cup all made it in as well. Tired. We had a pit stop to help a fellow one lapper with a bad fuel gauge sender.
one advantage of being back of the pack is we get to help those that have had trouble. Never leave a teammate behind! A couple quick calls and 15 minutes later we had them back on the road!

Just finished the first session--I drove because it was a half-wet track, and the results were less than awesome.
I made a few mistakes--haven't been here in a few years and the conditions were sketchy at best--but more importantly the car is losing power after a lap. It seems to be pulling boost, likely due to high IATs. Road Atlanta has warm weather and lots of WOT, and the stock intercooler is a known bottleneck on these cars. Oh well--just another reason to hope for rain.
If anyone can contact the livestreamers, please ask them to hold the phone the right way 'round (landscape)

apparently it wasn't as bad as you think, since you were faster than the TT-RS
Yeah, results are in and I did okay--28th overall, and 3rd in class. The track was dry for the last few sessions, so the slower cars jumped way up and made things interesting.
We still had a nice showing--beat the factory-backed Camry by a large margin, as well as a GT500, TT RS and Michelin-backed Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing. Go little GTI Go!
Andy is running the afternoon session, where we'll have a dry track.
Almost time to head out on track! Here's a shot of the Camry's interior, complete with heated and cooled seats.
Tom, thanks for keeping the content coming. It was a fun day to see you and all at Nelson. But, oddly sad to be driving back home and not advancing forward.
Session complete, we're packed up and on the road. Next stop Nashville!
Andy did fairly well, but the car conspired against him, too: Low fuel caused it to starve in turn 12, costing time. Here're his results:
Noticed the white rowdy sounding Camaro and the Tesla were on the DNS list, both were pretty quick at Nelson

the white Camaro 1LE went out in the morning and pitted in before completing the first hot lap. In the afternoon, I think it came in to the pits at the end of the sighting lap. Don't know any more than that, though.
Tesla was looking for a new tire--apparently they didn't make it to Road Atlanta, but will be in Nashville tomorrow. Sounds like a puncture or something similar.

so, there was a couple posts (now removed) in here about a Cayman that brushed a tire wall yesterday at Nelson. they made it back and competed at Road America. The owner posted to a OneLap driver's group, and I figured I'd quote it here, to give y'all a sense of what the OneLap community (even the 'manufacturer funded' teams) are like:
Just wanted to take the time to thank EVERYONE who pitched in to help on the Cayman. It was almost overwhelming how many chipped in! It had been successfully patched up and on our way to Atlanta! Special thanks to Team Toyota, and especially Scott Donahue. I have lots of [drinks] to buy!
*Side note... honestly can't tell anything is wrong from the inside!
as Andy has said countless times in the past... "It's us vs. the event, not us vs. each other"
In reply to sleepyhead the buffalo :
GRM Pete and I were in the garage when the Cayman came in. Specifically, I helped with some plastic trim at the passenger rear wheel. I did not make any of the earlier posts about it but the owner politely asked for "no pictures published" and it seems everyone complied.
Without pictures...some cosmetic damage and plastic bits but it seems to be nothing that stopped him from moving forward. Once things were sorted, and by that time the event was over, the owner took the car back on-track for a medium hot lap - road test. The reports when he returned was all good. Then, great guys who were helping him, got out alignment gear and started going to town! It really was a good show of sportsmanship. I didn't specifically recognize the guys helping him the most but a few things I noticed...
I just checked. Yes, the car put up both morning and afternoon times at Road Atlanta.
Made it to Nashville, but something is wrong--we just checked into the hotel, but there's a big bright thing in the sky. Is this... a hotel before dark?!
Lifted from FB:
Word on the street is that the AMC has a GM 6.0L and a T56 trans. Many race track outlines on his back window so this is not exactly his first rodeo with this car.
Is that sunshine under the right front?
Fun fact learned Sunday...In this Mazda2 they are running a hot ecu that gives them more redline but that ecu does not have cruise control. So, a pre-departure exercise is 2 screws and 2 large connectors to swap the ecu. The ECU is under hood.
Also from a closed group FB page. I couldn't figure how to share this private video so I ended up using my phone pointed at my laptop. Because of this the sound is worse than the original. One commenter called this a brown flag moment!

Because we got to the hotel so early last night, we finally had a chance to review the data we've been collecting. Every time the car goes out on track it has my Garmin Catalyst running, as well as a standard action camera mounted to the passenger headrest to capture the driver. We spent over an hour looking through things to find answers.
Our big question? Why the heck was I beating 13-time national champion Andy Hollis. That should not be happening, so we started digging. And pretty soon a reason emerged: Andy and the VW are in a disagreement over turbo lag.
The GTI isn't horrible, but it is a small-displacement turbocharged car. There's a second or so delay between asking for power and getting it. And Andy, who's used to his Miata, CRX, or McLaren, hates that it takes the car a second or so to build boost when he's exiting a corner.
I drive different cars constantly, so I'm a bit more adaptable. I figured out that the fast way to drive the GTI is to stab the throttle immediately after turn-in, so the car can build boost while you're going through the corner. As Andy said "if I drove like that in the McLaren it would instantly drive off the track." And that's true, but this ain't no McLaren! So, Andy has some McLearnin' to do about establishing (bad) habits to overcome turbo lag.
We found lots of room for improvement in my data, too: I may be hitting the throttle at the right time, but Andy is generally more consistent lap to lap, and better at finding the correct line and track placement than I am. Part of this might be the turbo lag--I generally apex later at every corner, but I'm not sure how much of that is because my throttle strategy means I never know exactly when the car will start accelerating. Either way the data shows he's a better driver, and I'm going to try and steal as much of that wisdom as possible.
If we can each adjust our driving based on what we've learned, this is going to keep being a fun, competitive fight at each track. And we'll hopefully end up faster as a team, too.
In reply to Tom Suddard :
You are a brave man for eating that when you are going to be driving and not near a bathroom! Im gonna guess that is hampton inn and suites? They had a relatively good breakfast.
Time for a track walk (scoot)
I've never driven here, but Andy has a few times. This is also where he took the GTI to a track day last week on his way up to South Bend. He'll definitely have home field advantage.
Almost time for our first session; dry track with a small chance of rain later means Andy goes out first, so we'll see what happens. He's going to practice fighting turbo lag and see how it goes.
Andy just got back and "finally figured out how to drive this stupid car!" He clicked off a string of 1:10 second laps, and seemed to be banking time on the Camry.
The Tesla had an off this morning and briefly became an electric lawn mower; apparently the car's computers freaked out due to a mismatched left rear tire (they're running one all-season after burning up two of their Michelins). Fortunately the car is okay and they have a replacement tire headed to Texas.
We handed the Catalyst off to pro driver coach and OLOA champ Tom O'Gorman to see if he could spot the technique differences between Tom and I. It took him less than five minutes to find all of it...which took us over an hour. If you ever need a driver coach, he's the man.
morning times are beginning to be posted:
https://onelapofamerica.com/event/ResultsEventOverall.do?trackEventId=266&eventId=44
Track is hot for afternoon sessions, so I'm waiting our turn to go out. Andy's performance was great this morning, so he clearly learned from our data. My goal is to work on my line and my brake release on corner entry to try and stay ahead of him.
Just finished up, packed the car, and we're back on the road. Verdict: Andy wins today! Based on the Catalyst data it looks like he's about a second per lap faster than me. We'll see what that means for the overall results once timing is posted in a few hours. I know where the extra time is--I was way too conservative on the curbing. Nicely done, Andy!
Tonight we have a 735 mile transit to Eagle's Canyon Raceway in Texas.

Results are in for Nashville afternoon and it's a 2nd in class and 28th overall for Tom!! Seems like many teams got slower in the afternoon heat. Most important, Tom just barely squeaked by our two closest class rivals to maximize class points. Woot!
Day 2 video:
Day 3 video, including our BIG mechanical failure and questionable continuation of the event:
Good morning from wherever Eagle's Canyon is. Andy is in charge of hotels and navigation, while I just use my younger eyes to follow the Waze line in the dark. We've reached the point of One Lap where I honestly couldn't put a pin in our location if you handed me a map.
Today we're awake before the Holiday Inn Express, so this is our breakfast.
had a thought this morning about one aspect of your week you haven't covered yet: what is the setup you and Andy running for Head & Neck Restraint?
What's an eyeball guess of the split between half-cage + HANS, vs. OEM Belts + Hybrid of the other competitors?
I realize this might be a "touchy" subject; but it's a new requirement... and I'm curious to see how the field (Old Dogs, and Puppies alike) are adjusting to it.

I missed it yesterday, taking care of other things around here... but, I shouldn't have been surprised that Bryan and Solomon made it to the track to cover part of the morning...
so, just to be clear, this is YESTERDAY's Livestream, added here for completeness... and in case you have 30mins of your day to kill today, and want to catch up
Enjoying following along with this one!
Can somebody remind me: Do both the morning and the afternoon sessions count in the standings, or is it just your better time from the two sessions that counts?
Also: What's the deal with tire changes? I thought they weren't allowed but earlier somebody said the Tesla was getting some new tires.
In reply to CrashDummy :
It's the cumulative time from all sessions. So if your codriver runs a 4:18.678 and you run the afternoon and get a 4.10.345 it's added to the total running timr
Good morning from Eagle's Canyon! I've never been here before, while Andy has a few dozen hours here. Time to walk the track and learn some tips.

so, the morning session is a 3 lap cumulative time that's scored against the other times put down in that session. Each place garners 5points. So, 1st (this year, with 84 cars entered) gets 420points, 2nd 415. If there's a tie in time... then you'll see "3rd, 3rd" and the scoring will skip to "5th", and each tied in 3rd gets "3rd points" (i.e. 410).
The afternoon session is a separate session of 3 cumulative laps that are scored.
The points are added cumulative over the various sessions. In the cumulative/Overall (and class results) results:
https://onelapofamerica.com/event/CumResultsOverall.do?eventId=44
the time for each session is also added up cumulatively for the event, and is used to adjust as a tie-braker in points, with the lower cumulative time getting the better overall placing.
Similar works for "class", each timed session you'll score 5pts for placing in-class in session.
also, if you DNS/DNF for a session, you get 0 points, and get 120(?) minutes added to you cumulative time. There's also time penalties for knocking over cones on-track, and a 10 sec time penalty for missing pit-in, or failing to stop at start/finish for your standing start of your timed session.
I have evidently forgotten how to internet. Let me try this whole link thing again. We'd love to have you subscribe and stick around for more BMW/BimmerWorld content if thats your thing. We'll be covering Pikes Peak this year in the same format with daily vlogs.

Still waiting on timing, but I think we did well in the morning session--Andy managed times ranging from 2:12 to 2:14.

after looking at who you were second to, and that they're now just 5points behind you... maybe not. but, then again, you're only 10points behind the STI, and only 15points out of first. man, Mid-Priced Sedan is competitive this year!

car go wheeee!!!
I'm in line to go out! Because of the threat of rain/actual rain, they're enforcing a strict run order based on the first session at Nelson. We'll be the 46th car out.
Whelp, there are a lot of places at Eagle's canyon where an early apex is beneficial. Turn 15 is not one of them.... I ran wide and chose grass instead of straddling the curb with the car's plastic oil pan. Other than that the session went well enough and I did make some progress learning the track--I managed a 2:16, but not sure what the total session time was. We'll see when the results are posted.
afternoon results already being populated... could get interesting

Drags just got canceled, so we're headed to Hallet, OK. Eta is 5pm, so this will be another short day.
Got boned hard for the last two groups. Sitting waiting to go out and the rain just dumped on us. Car set for full kill in the dry, was worthless in the rain and the lovely river running across the track that pitched the car towards the grass caused me to catch it and reinsure the shoulder. No lunch, no breakfast, no dry run and pain. Not been the best day of one lap for me for sure.

Still at ecr helping the Subaru team get the down pipe back on. They blew the pipe yesterday and shot a chance to use the lift. One Lap is all about helping each other (back here on the slow end). Team Toyota is helping a z06 get the power steering pump back on.

Awesome, glad they're getting it back together!
I think our Milwaukee M12 light is still with them; would you mind making sure it gets to Hallet tomorrow?
Here's the view from the highway. We hit the road ASAP so we'd have time to increase rear spring rate for the drags, but now that they're cancelled we're just cruising through Oklahoma.
In reply to bobzilla :
Awesome to hear they got it back together! And no problem on the dead light, I'll charge it tomorrow.
I'm so torn on who to root for!
Ben and Nick are my racing buddies. GRM is awesome. Which VW to root for? Good luck!
Waze was, uh, less than helpful on the way to Hallet this morning. But we made the most out of it and tested a few different launch control strategies.
Now that we're at the track, it's time for fuel--we haven't been able to find 93 and don't want to load our 91 octane tune for local gas. We're going to try 100 octane today on the (very) slim chance that our power loss is heat-induced spark knock, but I'm pretty sure the car is responding to intake temps to prevent knock instead of waiting for the knock to happen.
I'm attempting a new strategy to learn tracks: the folding bike. My hope is that I can better replicate the feeling of driving with this vs. the scooter, but we'll see if the results support this theory.

It looks like the traffic was light that way, right?
Andy just finished his session and did very well--1:28s in this car isn't half bad! We'll see if it's enough for a second in class once results are posted.
And looking at the Catalyst times, Andy didn't lose speed over three laps, either. We'll see if the car pulls power this afternoon, but 100 octane gas might have actually made a difference.
In reply to sleepyhead the buffalo :
Oh yeah, the best place to review data is the front of the lunch line.
Fun fact...
A GTI in the dry is faster than a McLaren 720 in damp conditions, according to results from last years visit here.
Or, I just suck in the wet.
:)
Morning results are posted; Andy was 29th overall and third in class. Well done! I go out in an hour or so, then it's a 700 mile transit to NCM.

Pretty sure that is nick. Also, I'm pretty sure (if I know ben), that the unicorn in some of the other pictures is Nick and Bens.
Just hopped out of the car and feel real good about that session--I managed a lap two tenths slower than Andy, and I've never been to Hallet before. Sweet! The Catalyst said my overall time was equal to Andy, but that's without the second or so launch to the finish line. That should mean a similar overall finish.
We're packed up and on the road to NCM--ETA 11:19.
"humorously", it looks like someone grabbed the morning page of results when loading the afternoon's results into the database... or some other copy/paste error:

The hamsters might be working to correct it, or they might be beating fleet feet to outrun the rain that I'm hearing chatter about?
Tom Suddard said:I will never get tired of looking at this combo on the highway.
I was jabbering at work about how manufactured the closeout panel was, and one of my coworkers pointed out that they could have 3D printed the surrounds.
And, you know, there are regular breaks in the surround like it had been printed on something that could do no larger than, say, 18x18 or so. Maybe 24x24.
I keep forgetting that we live in the future
fyi, afternoon results have been updated to "fix the glitch"
edit
looks like Tom as 0.5sec slower than Andy, which dropped him 5spots as some people "learned" from the morning.
wvumtnbkr said:How and why is a hellcat redeye in the same group as vw golfs?
After watching Keiichi Tsuchiya drive one on track, they need more brake, maybe?
It was funny to hear him freaking out in every braking zone.
Also, there is a market for ridiculous Mopars in Japan, as there is a dedicated private importer for them

Yeah, I'm beyond elated to be .5 second off Andy's cumulative three laps at a track he knows well and I'd never been to. Full credit to the horrible folding bicycle and Andy's tips once I'd ridden a few laps--already scheming the perfect One Lap bicycle build for next year.
In reply to wvumtnbkr :
One Lap's classing structure is a bit interesting. Both of our cars in base form are available for less than $50,000, so we're both in mid-price sedan. (Base form meaning a V6 Charger in the Hellcat's case).
wvumtnbkr said:How and why is a hellcat redeye in the same group as vw golfs?
I mean, it's a Charger Redeye... so, thus "Sedan"? I mean, it does technically exceed the nominal price cap of $50k... but, 1) it's just a Charger with a big engine. 2) the rules are kinda of like the Pirate Code: 'they're really more like guidelines'
and, at the end of the day, it's Brock's event... and he'll class cars where he thinks they should be (there's a note to that effect at the bottom of the classing structure).
I'm kinda more curious of "what about a Mk7 Golf makes it a sedan?", when the Mk7's and earlier are classed in SGT-2 SB.
In reply to sleepyhead the buffalo :
VW calls it a sedan, and it has four doors. It's also not a Sports/GT car, so it doesn't have a great home. Based on past results we figured this would be a softer class, but looking at results we would be second in SGT-2. Oh well, live and learn.
One of the cool OLOA traditions is to text pics of each other's cars from the road.
Thanks Ian Stewart!
Andy Hollis said:118 in a 75...ooof.
Not us.
118 in a 75 actually sounds like Classic Ian Stewart but that's not his car. He must have only beed doing about 112 and they let him slide.
JG Pasterjak said:118 in a 75 actually sounds like Classic Ian Stewart but that's not his car. He must have only beed doing about 112 and they let him slide.
He seems to have mellowed. We followed Ian for a bit tonight...10 over.
Ballered up today to stay dry. Also swapped tires F/R to get some fresh tread depth where it counts most. Pressuring up a couple pounds since we won't gain as much on track.
Rain Master Tom is in the house this am.
I borrowed a bicycle from the HART team (thanks!) and did four laps of NCM on it this morning. I've never been here before, but it looks like fun. We'll see how it goes!
The classing structure seems to be really loose and the modifications are wide open. Year I did it someone VR6 swapped a diesel VW Beetle, yet they were still able to run in the alternative fuel category. Since the car was a diesel to begin with, Brock didn't seem to care that it was now powered by a regular gasoline engine, which I found very strange....
Live and learn...
Swapping the deeper tread to the front was a mistake, as the car was diabolical even in the straights. Hydroplaning just in the rear will get your attention real quick.
Full tread vs 3/32...
That was one of the sketchiest sessions I've ever done in a car--Omg, omg, omg. I still don't know the track at all, and the car was driving like there were randomly placed kick plates all over the track. Terrifying! We're making setup changes and will try again after lunch.
Edit: Checked out the in-car and wow did I slide around a lot. Will post later.
Results are posted--36th overall and I barely beat the Sundae Cup crowd (who, granted, had a drier track). We're back out in a little bit to see if we've made the car less terrifying.
First cars are out and we face a conundrum: The track is drying fast and no more rain is forecast. Do we reconnect the rear sway bar?
And if we're betting on a dry track, do we put Andy in the car (who's won multiple TT championships at NCM) or me in the car (who's faster in the wet but doesn't know the track).
Decisions, decisions.
I'd say Andy just because that track was one of the hardest for me to learn all the little places to pickup time.
It took me like 100 laps to really understand the track and get to a decent pace.
Either way, have fun!
Andy's done and he killed it--I saw a 2:26 on the Catalyst but we're still waiting on official results. Car is packed and now we're on the road to South Bend.
Andy Hollis said:And we're here...Bowling Green!
I once stayed in that hotel and had both a Krystal and a White Castle in the same meal. I felt like the President of Starfleet.
Results are in...3rd in class, 27th overall for the dry afternoon.
That leaves us poised for a podium in class and 25th overall for the whole event.
Weather for dry skid pad forecast to be a damp/drying condition. Hmmmm...
We've reached Andy's spiritual home in order to complete a One Lap ritual: Cracker Barrel! No ordering off the cooked to order part of the menu!
And we're back at the host hotel. We're dangerously close to finishing this event--all that's left is the dry skidpad tomorrow.
John Welsh said:Yes, the real winners are those who successfully get back to South Bend

The awards ceremony is held right inside Tire Rack's distribution center, so we're dining with the aroma of fine tires all around us.
Woohoo! Will write more later, but we are seriously happy with how well our little VW did against the OLOA field. Third place behind a Mk8 Golf R and a Hellcat.
Finally back home and woke up at 5:30am just like every day this week. The OLOA hangover is real! Tom is still driving the car back to FL. Stopped in Nashville. I wonder if he'll feel the need to visit a track today...I know I do.
Same here--woke up early and just got in the car out of habit.
Two photos I forgot to post yesterday:
1. Andy saying goodbye at the airport. We store him at an undisclosed location in between OLOA and tire test events.
2. Some random rest area where I also bumped into a few more One Lappers.
I "only" have 9.5 hours to drive today, and there isn't even a track day to do before I hit the road. Downright luxurious!
In reply to ShawneeCreek :
Considering I was in the wrong tires and 6th car out in a wet pad still I'm not angry. She was right in the ragged edge and all of my steering corrections were being done with my foot. I couldn't ask for more.
Just being in the back of the pack means you tend to have more "adversity" than even the mid pack. Two nights in a row we didn't even have time for any dinner, 4 nights in a row hotel wasn't found until midnight or later. All the crashes, delays and cars running out if friggin fuel on track meant we didn't even get our last session until 5pm. Eagles canyon one of only 2 run groups to get a very wet and sketchy track. But I wouldn't change a thing. These my peeps back here. Plus we get to swoop in for the rescue when people run into problems even if it costs us more time.
finally got a full nights sleep and after a few days to decompress I'll see if I can put together our story from the back and a few of our fun stories.
