Between the fourth-, fifth- and sixth-generation Ford Mustang, which one is really the fastest on track?

Lucky for you, you’ll have the opportunity to find out at the Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge Presented by Grassroots Motorsports October 12-15 at NCM Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Representing the fourth-gen Mustang is a 2001 model driven by Marty Rogan. Powering the Mustang is a more modern 5.0-liter Coyote V8, good for 404 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque. Other notable modifications include Maximum Motorsports coil-overs and sway bars, plus brake setup comprised of Stoptech parts up front and Ford Cobra parts in the rear.

For the fifth-gen Mustang, we have a 2006 model piloted by Ryan Cheek. The car’s 4.6-liter Modular V8 has had just about everything done to it: bored, stroked, cammed, ported and more. All that means the engine is capable of over 400 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque. The chassis remains mostly stock, though does sport Motion Control Suspension 2-way coil-overs and adjustable sway bar, end links, lower rear control arm and Panhard bar.

In the sixth-gen Mustang corner, we have a 2016 GT350 with Chris Russell behind the wheel. Noted to be a former Ford Performance Racing School car, the Mustang retains a factory 5.2-liter Voodoo V8 rated at 526 horsepower and 429 lb.-ft. of torque. Aside from the OEM Brembo brakes and MagneRide suspension, the GT350 features springs and sway bars from Ford Performance and adjustable sway bar endlinks from Steeda.

What is the Ultimate Track Car Challenge? It’s our annual no-holds-barred track competition that simply seeks the fastest machines on four wheels. The rules are brief: Car and driver must just pass a safety inspection. Period.

Pretty much everyone is welcome: New, old, factory-bought and home-built. Wings are cool. So are box flares, giant intercoolers and sequential shifters.

I have wanted a 2011 GT for a while now. I was not a fan of the style when they came out but it has grown on me a lot.
