Before we could paint the roll cage in our 1965 Mustang vintage racer, we had a bit more work to do: install our mounts for the harness, window net, electrical cut-off and fire system pull.

For the harness’s inner mount–the one on the transmission tunnel–we used the plate that came with our Schroth harnesses. Then we added a 1/8-inch-thick steel plate behind it to fully fill the cavity on the Mustang’s transmission tunnel.

For the outer mount–the one next to the door–we fabricated a ¼-inch plate and welded it (on both sides) to our roll cage. We were careful not to mount the Schroth hardware in shear on the cage.

A window net should cover as much of the side window opening as possible. We found the perfect net at I/O Port Racing: an 18x24-inch net for $69.95. It features five straps that we can easily attach to the cage.

Ken at I/O Port Racing recommended a Joes window net mount. The 28-inch model worked perfectly for us, and we can see why the recommendation: The anodized handle is easy to locate and operate. The price of this kit, including the mounting tabs, was $69.95.

Installation of this rod is straight forward enough. You just want the rod tight enough to stay in position on a bumpy race track but loose enough to easily be removed should you need to quickly exit the car.

Once the cage is complete and painted, we'll install the net for real–more updates to come.
