Cobra Automotive, our partners on our 1965 Mustang vintage race project, uses 15x7-inch American Racing Torq Thrust D wheels on its race cars. Tire Rack sells them, with price depending on size–figure about $125 each for our size.

As fate would have it, we already had a set–a benefit of having other Mustangs in the fleet.

But these wheels need some prep work before they can go on track. As Cobra Automotive’s Curt Vogt explained, while these wheels are tough, light, inexpensive and look right on a vintage Mustang, their alloy lug seating surfaces will not stand up to the repeated mountings and dismountings common in racing applications.

Cobra Automotive sells steel inserts for these wheels. These inserts, part No. 292-RM7-insert, retail for just $2.45 each. A competent machine shop can insert them in about an hour.
