All Herbies get a +1 from me
This is Herbie. My parents were VW mechanics when I was a kid and they gave me this car when I was six! I learned to drive in it at 9. I “modified” (some would say destroyed) it when I was a teenager and I’ve been dragging it around ever since. Plans include 944 alloy rear control arms, 944 brakes, widened 912 steel wheels, and a repaint to early 1960’s Porsche ivory white (sorry, no Herbie stripes) So far I’ve got a big pile of Porsche parts and a 71 Super Beetle parts car. Someday…
Took the body off the parts car today! The next step is the new floors, …
Bought another parts car... Herbie gets 1977 Super Beetle front suspension, with rack and pinion steering and disc brakes!
Installed the 944 trailing arms & rear brakes, was a near bolt-on. Swapped over the front suspension for 1977 stuff with the later struts & rack and pinion steering, but contrary to what I've read on the interwebby, the 944 front brakes are not a straight forward swap. Looks like I either need custom struts or some really expensive spindles from Germany to make it work..
Great to see some aircooled goodness back on the road! Cool project.
I did the complete swap on my super beetle, using 87 944 turbo bits all the way around. I had a custom strut housing made that takes rabbit inserts but the 944 turbo spindles are stock. Good looking project so far :)
Sounds like its going well. I'm rebuilding my 69 Baja and hope to get another Bug fairly soon,
