Jul 29, 2009 update on dennisg's 1934 Vintage Race Cars { once it was a post office jeep}

central steering

A single passenger car steers from its center. I use chain and sprockets to move the steering to the center of the dash after the steering shaft has passed the engine. It also has the advantage that you can change sprockets to get different ratios. As this car was lengthened 2 ft, its steering was overdriven so the length increase did not slow its steering.

I changed the steering to manual Toyota rack and pinion when I changed its jeep axle for a ford pickup axle. It now steers faster and easier. This was a big improvement over the heavy and numb jeep steering.
